Behind the Kit: How Defy Designs and Produces Irish Teamwear
Every kit that leaves Defy starts with a conversation. A club secretary with a vision for next season. A team manager who wants to finally get the colours right. A school PE teacher who's been making do with off-the-shelf jerseys for too long. Our job is to take that conversation and turn it into something the whole club is proud to wear.
Here's a look at how we actually do it.
The Brief
Every project starts with a brief. Sometimes it's detailed — a club that knows exactly what they want, with reference images and Pantone codes. More often it's looser: "we want something modern, our colours are red and black, and we want it to feel premium." Both are fine starting points. Our design team is used to working with whatever level of direction a client can give.
We ask about the sport, the competition level, any existing brand guidelines, and what the club has worn before. If there's something about the current kit they love, we want to know. If there's something they hate, we definitely want to know.
Design
Our designers work in-house, which means fast turnaround and direct communication. We don't outsource design to a third party and then relay feedback — you're talking directly to the people creating your kit.
We typically present two or three initial concepts, each exploring a different direction. From there, it's an iterative process — adjustments to colours, layout, typography, and details until the design is exactly right. Most projects reach final sign-off within two or three rounds of revisions.
Production
All Defy kit is produced using sublimation printing, which means the design is heat-transferred directly into the fabric fibres rather than printed on top. The result is a finish that's vibrant, precise, and permanent — colours that won't crack, fade, or peel regardless of how hard the kit is used.
We work with performance fabrics specifically selected for each sport — lightweight and breathable for athletics and basketball, more robust for rugby and GAA, technical and moisture-wicking for soccer. The cut and construction of each garment is designed for the demands of the sport it's made for.
Quality Control
Before any order ships, every garment is checked against the approved design. Colours, measurements, personalisation details, and print quality are all verified. If something isn't right, it doesn't leave the building.
Delivery
Our standard turnaround is five weeks from order confirmation. For clubs with a specific deadline — a season opener, a cup final, a presentation night — we'll work backwards from that date to make sure everything arrives in time. We'd always recommend building in a buffer if you can.
